Bali kite festival 2017 – Be the Part to Witness Grand Joyous Moments

Different countries and continents witness different types of celebrations. Some of them are religious, some international, and some of them are for entertainment and fun. Bali is also a beautiful tourist place in Indonesia witnessing the most awaited and famous Bali kite festival 2017. The wonderful annual international kite festival held in July in Padang Galak Area at Sanur Beach in Bali.

You will see traditional giant kits of 4 meters in width and 10 meters in length that are made and flown competitively by teams from the villages of Denpasar. Not to mention the event – a seasonal religious festival intended to send a message to the Hindu Gods to create abundant crops and harvests. You will see approx 80 people in each team with its own gamelon Band, flag bearers and flyers. There are different types of kits flown in this festival like:

  • Bebean or Fish Shaped
  • Janggan or Bird Shaped
  • Pecukan or Leaf-Shaped

These kits are flown by teams of 10 or more experienced kite-fliers. The Bebean is counted as the largest kite and looks like a broad mouthed, split-tailed fish. The janggan form has a broad flowing cloth tail that can reach more than 100 meters in length.

Last one that is called a Pecukan need most skill to fly as its unstable form often tumbles towards the ground. You can see these kites in different color combinations like red, black, white and traditional colours that are used in the kit’s designs. Each type of traditional kite has its own competition with heats of 10 teams vying for the best launch and longest flight. Sometimes, kites come down over the adjacent rice paddies; while teams have to dash through the paddy to rescue the kit before it lands in the water. Before the beginning of this grand festival, a competition for kite making is also organized that include detailed three-dimensional figures representing the Hindu Gods or Sponsorship kites.

Traditional and new creation kites are designed from bamboo and cotton cloth. July is the best month to enjoy this grand festival as weather conditions are in favor of kite flying and winds blow continually from east to west in most of Indonesia. Such grand festivals are enjoyed by people from all walks of life from locals to travelers.
